Honor the Victims of Communism and Those Who Love Liberty

"The fall of the Communist empire," said Czech President Vaclav Havel, "was an event on the same scale of importance as the fall of the Roman Empire." And yet in Washington, D.C.--the city of memorials--there is no monument marking this epic event. And there is no memorial to the many millions who died under communist tyranny. Until now. Under Public Law 103-199, our Foundation is authorized to design, construct and maintain an international Memorial to the more than 100 million victims of communism. In April 2005, the National Capital Planning Commission formally approved a site for our Memorial at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., New Jersey Avenue, N.W., and G Street, N.W. It is across from the Georgetown University Law Center and only two blocks from Union Station and the Metro. There is a clear view of the U.S. Capitol, topped by the famous Statue of Freedom. An unobstructed view of the Capitol was a top priority because at the heart of our Memorial is a 10-foot bronze replica of the "Democracy" statue erected by Chinese students in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and based on our own Statue of Liberty. On September 15, the Commission of Fine Arts approved our design, subject to consultation with its staff, a formality. We will again go before the National Capital Planning Commission in October, this time for design approval. Barring unforeseen complications, we should be able to break ground for our Memorial early in 2006 and have our dedication ceremony in the fall of 2006. There is a continuing task--to raise the funds needed to build the Memorial. So far, we have raised about $400,000 of our $700,000 goal. We have received challenge grants of $150,000.
